Catch Basin Frames and Grates
Cast Iron Frames and Grates are the go to standard for street drainage applications. These cast iron inlets or catch basins come in different sizes depending on municipality standards, expected waterflow and load bearing requirements. Cast iron frames and grates can also be furnished with a cast iron curb piece depending on the specification. Grates can be furnished ADA (American with Disabilities Act), Bicycle proof, heel proof, pedestrian rated or traffic rated. Inscriptions can also be placed on the grates, such as “Dump no Waste Drains to Waterways”
In New York and New Jersey, popular products are the Type 1 and Type 2 cast iron frame and grate. Hoods are also placed under the grate with two stainless steel hooks to catch any debris that may have fallen through the grate. Other popular sizes are 24” x 24”, 24” x 30” and 30” x 42”. Different heights are also available depending on the load bearing requirements.
Grates can be furnished ADA, where the inscriptions are less than ¼” raised and slots are thin. Different slot variations are thin slots, parallel slots, square slots, bike proof slots and many more. The grates can come painted or coated with a rust proof coating. Cast Iron curb pieces are applied in some applications as well.
Residential Catch basins can be purchased with a full kit and have a pre fabricated basin. these kits are easy to install and come pre assembled. Either iron, galvinized steel or plastic can be used with these catch basin kits. A popular kit that is often used is made by a company called Swiftdrain. For more industrial or commercial applications catch basin inlet frame and covers are used. These iron grates can weight upwards of 700 lbs and can be rated class 30 or 35 which are 30,000 psi and 35,000 respectively.
